Day-by-day itinerary
Activities and trail selection are flexible and may vary according to weather conditions, bird activity, and the pace of the group.
At the airport you will be greeted by a member of our organization, who will escort you to your hotel with a short briefing about Quito and the country in general.
JW Marriott Quito (B&B)Following your international flight, today is dedicated to rest and acclimatization before the birding adventure begins. Situated at 2,850 meters (9,350 ft) above sea level, Quito provides the ideal setting to adjust to Ecuador's altitude while enjoying a leisurely introduction to the country. You are free to explore the city's beautiful colonial center, visit its museums, or simply relax at the hotel. Our local representative will be available to offer recommendations on the best attractions, cafés, and restaurants where you can sample Ecuador's rich and diverse cuisine. A restful first day ensures everyone is refreshed and ready to begin exploring Ecuador's extraordinary birdlife in the days ahead.
JW Marriott Quito (B&B)After breakfast, we depart Quito and descend through the dramatic western slopes of the Andes toward the lush Chocó cloud forest, one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots. Upon arrival at Mashpi Lodge, you will be welcomed with a refreshing drink and an introduction to the reserve before enjoying lunch and settling into your room.
In the afternoon, we head out for our first exploration of the forest trails, where the incredible diversity of the Chocó begins to unfold. Depending on weather conditions and recent bird activity, our guides will select the most rewarding route for the afternoon. After dinner, guests may attend an optional natural history presentation by the lodge staff, providing fascinating insights into Mashpi's wildlife and ongoing conservation efforts.
Mashpi LodgeThe morning begins with one of Mashpi's most rewarding experiences: an early birdwatching session from the lodge's terrace. As the cloud forest awakens, guests can enjoy coffee, tea, or hot chocolate while observing an incredible diversity of birds with the guidance of Mashpi's expert naturalists.
After breakfast, the day's explorations are tailored to weather conditions, wildlife activity, and each guest's interests. Guided excursions typically depart in the morning and again in the afternoon, offering opportunities to discover waterfalls, rivers, primary and secondary forests, observation towers, and Mashpi's remarkable biodiversity.
Guests may explore some of the reserve's signature trails, including the Main Trail, which connects many of Mashpi's highlights; the Magnolia Trail, with its scenic waterfall and endemic Magnolia mashpi ; the Copal Waterfall Trail; or the Howler Monkey Trail through pristine primary forest. Those seeking a more adventurous experience may choose the Río Laguna Trail or, for longer stays, the full-day Yumbo Trail leading to the Malimpias River and a natural swimming pool.
Between excursions, there is time to relax at the spa or the Samay Center, allowing guests to recharge while surrounded by the tranquility of the cloud forest.
As darkness falls, the forest transforms once again. An optional guided night walk reveals frogs, insects, reptiles, and other nocturnal wildlife, while evening talks by Mashpi's naturalists and resident biologist provide fascinating insights into the reserve's conservation efforts, ongoing research, and extraordinary biodiversity.
Mashpi LodgeThe day begins with another opportunity to experience the cloud forest at dawn. Guests may once again join an optional birdwatching session from the lodge's terrace, where the early morning hours offer excellent opportunities to observe hummingbirds, toucans, tanagers, and many other species as the forest comes to life.
Following breakfast, the day's adventures focus on Mashpi's signature experiences, each offering a unique perspective of the reserve. Glide above the forest canopy aboard the Dragonfly aerial cable car, enjoy the unforgettable views from the Sky Bike suspended high above the river, or admire the surrounding landscape from the Observation Tower.
Throughout the day, guests may also visit the lively Hummingbird Garden, where colorful birds gather at close range, and the Life Center, home to the Butterfly Garden and beautiful collections of native orchids and bromeliads that showcase the remarkable diversity of the cloud forest.
As evening approaches, the experience continues with a guided visit to the Mashpi Frog Lagoon, where frogs, insects, and other nocturnal wildlife emerge after dark. Combined with the sounds of the rainforest at night, this unique experience offers a memorable conclusion to another extraordinary day in one of Ecuador's most biodiverse ecosystems.
Mashpi LodgeYour final morning at Mashpi offers one more opportunity to experience the cloud forest as it awakens. Early risers may once again enjoy birdwatching from the lodge's terrace, where the first light of day draws movement and song from the surrounding forest. After breakfast, there is still time for a final short exploration or one last activity, always chosen in consultation with your guides.
Back at the lodge, check-out takes place at 11:00 a.m., followed by departure at approximately 11:30 a.m. for the return transfer to Quito. A complimentary box lunch is provided for the journey, allowing you to enjoy one last taste of Mashpi as the forest gradually gives way to the Andean landscapes beyond.
It is a gentle close to your stay, with the sounds, colors, and quiet wonder of the cloud forest lingering long after the journey back begins.
JW Marriott Quito (B&B)After breakfast, your first Ecuadorian experience comes to an end, with the flexibility to choose the option that best fits your travel plans. Guests may depart Quito for their international flight home, extend their stay with an additional night in the capital, or continue their journey with an unforgettable extension to the Galápagos Islands.
For guests continuing from the mainland, the journey carries on with a flight from Quito to the Galápagos Islands. Travelers joining the tour directly in the Galápagos will meet the group upon arrival. From this point forward, remarkable wildlife encounters, volcanic landscapes, and the pristine ecosystems of the Galápagos await.
Upon arrival, head directly to the dock to board Yacht La Pinta. Your adventure starts with a welcome briefing, safety drill, cabin allocation, and lunch. Then we'll sail for our first afternoon exploration of South Plaza Island.
South Plaza Island
The island boasts turquoise waters contrasting against a volcanic landscape. Scarlet sesuvium succulents lead to a grove of prickly-pear cactus, home to colorful Galápagos land iguanas. Lively sea lion colonies and courting seabirds can be found along the coast. This stunning island offers a perfect introduction to the unique natural wonders of the archipelago.
Yacht La PintaExplore Santa Fe Island, part of the "Humboldt quartet" of islands in the Galápagos. It's a hotspot for genetic diversity and home to unique species like the Galápagos hawk and the elusive Santa Fe land iguana. Enjoy kayaking, snorkeling, and coastal exploration in the morning for a memorable visit.
Cerro Colorado Tortoise Habitat
After a satisfying lunch, we visit Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, where Charles Darwin first set foot in the Galápagos Islands. We then drive to Cerro Colorado, to see the breeding center for giant tortoises in a captivating deciduous forest. The sanctuary is also home to various bird species. We end the day exploring the town and its surroundings.
Yacht La PintaAfter arriving at Punta Pitt, on the eastern tip of San Cristóbal Island, enjoy a coastal trail with views of frigatebirds and sea lions. Look out for various species of boobies. If the weather is good, take a panga ride or go snorkeling to explore the marine life further.
Cerro Brujo
After lunch, take a dinghy ride to Cerro Brujo's white coral beach, a haven for birdwatching and a site of historical significance, as Charles Darwin explored it in 1835. Enjoy sightings of seabirds, shorebirds, and Galápagos sea lions.
Yacht La PintaExplore Punta Suárez in the morning to see unique lava terrain and remarkable seabird colonies. Keep an eye out for waved albatrosses, boobies, swallow-tail gulls, and the striking "blowhole" lava formation against the backdrop of the Humboldt Current. Look for colorful marine iguanas. This visit promises unforgettable encounters. End your morning adventure with a delightful lunch back on board.
Gardner Bay
In the afternoon, we'll visit Gardner Bay's pristine white coral beach. Here, you can observe playful sea lions, graceful mockingbirds, and charming finches, or enjoy snorkeling, kayaking, or a glass-bottom boat ride to explore the marine life.
Yacht La PintaVisit the Charles Darwin Research Station, home to important conservation programs, including the giant tortoise captive-rearing initiative. Learn about the ongoing efforts to protect the unique species and ecosystems of the Galápagos Islands.
Later, travel across Santa Cruz Island by bus and continue by ferry to Baltra Island for your flight back to Quito. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel for an overnight stay, marking the end of your Galápagos adventure and the conclusion of this unforgettable journey through Ecuador's most remarkable natural environments.
